“We wanted to make an exhibition in support of the painters, who might be considered as bridge builders, between the polar opposite positions of abstraction and figuration. The future possibilities for painting at this moment in history seem to be profoundly connected to the current demise of Modernism. Thus the issue of nuance and what I would call ‘in-between’ realities becomes extremely active for painting, which as an art-form is so sensitive to the surface texture and the meaning it carries. The young painters now are opening up areas of subtle positions that depend on overlapping realities and interpretations. What was formerly considered as weakness in painting is now its possibility. The cracks between the blocks of modernism have opened up to become the terrain.” Sean Scully, 6.28.06
